The "CAMILA" keyword comes after "Camilo", which is the name of a 19c Portuguese novelist (full name: Camilo Castelo Branco), very famous in the Minho province where the University of Minho is sited.

The choice of this acronym dates back to 1990 the year when the first version of CAMILA became available and the centenary of Camilo's death.

Blind and alone in his house in S.Miguel de Seide (in Minho, today a museum), the great writer ended his life committing suicide on June 1st, 1890.

The CAMILA project has been funded by JNICT contract Ref. 169/90.
